As part of the recent refurbishment of the iconic open-air viewing platform on Level 72 of The Shard, our team installed 270m² of 30mm thick, 600 × 600mm grooved porcelain paving supported by Class A fire-rated A-PED pedestals, an ALUrail aluminium subframe and hidden wind uplift discs.
The installation involved complex cutting around angled edges, structural columns and bespoke recessed service boxes for power, lighting and heating. Two access ramps were also formed using the pedestal and rail system to provide smooth access to the viewing area.
Working 72 floors above London presented unique logistical challenges, with materials requiring four separate lift transfers and restricted delivery times. Despite extreme summer temperatures, a demanding reopening programme, and late design changes, our team worked extended hours, including evenings and weekends, to deliver the project on schedule.
